I have been playing a lot of live poker recently, mostly at 2/5, and things have been going nicely. This 🌧️ week, however, disaster struck : my local casino has instituted "the rock."
The rock rules are terrible, I would even say 🌧️ pathological. They are:
* The rock is worth twice the big blind
* The player with the rock must post it as 🌧️ a straddle immediately regardless of position
* Action preflop always starts UTG unless the rock is UTG in which case it 🌧️ starts +1
* If a player in the blinds has the rock, it replaces their normal blind
* No other straddle is 🌧️ allowed
In this game the cap is 2000, but about 2/3 of players (and virtually all the fish) buy in for 🌧️ less than 1000, often around 300-500.
I am not sure exactly how to calculate the effect on correct strategy, but it 🌧️ feels like in most cases I should only be playing something like AQs, AK, QQ+. And if the rock is 🌧️ in the blinds I should only play AA. Ironically I don't think my 3bet strategy should change too much, but 🌧️ my opening and calling range should be cut down to almost nothing. This is because the more money goes into 🌧️ the pot, the less the rock matters. But it's also a de facto ultra short stack game so non premium 🌧️ hands lose value.
Other players seem to be making the wrong adjustment or no adjustment so the game might still be 🌧️ profitable (possibly even more profitable), but if I can only play one hand per hour I will probably find something 🌧️ else to do.
